5 Questions to Ask Before You Pay Any Solar Lead-Gen Agency Upfront

Most commercial solar installers who've tried outsourcing lead generation have a story — a retainer paid upfront, a few weeks of activity reports, and a list of contacts that went nowhere. It's common enough that it's practically a rite of passage in this industry. It's also almost always avoidable, if you ask the right questions before you sign anything.

Do I pay before or after the appointment is booked?

This is the single biggest predictor of how the relationship will go. If you're paying a flat retainer regardless of results, the incentive is on activity, not outcomes. If you're paying per booked appointment, the incentive lines up with what you actually want.

Who exactly gets contacted, and how is that decided?

A vague answer here — “decision-makers,” “qualified prospects” — is a warning sign. A specific answer names titles, company size, and how the list was built. If they can't tell you how someone ended up on the list, they can't tell you why that person will take your call seriously.

What happens if a booked appointment no-shows or isn't actually qualified?

Good vendors have an answer for this before you ask. If a meeting falls through because the contact wasn't real or wasn't the right person, is that on you or on them? This single clause in an agreement tells you more about a vendor's confidence in their own process than anything in their pitch deck.

Can I talk to a current client in a business close to mine?

Not a testimonial on a website — an actual conversation. Any agency doing real work with commercial solar contractors should be able to connect you with someone who'll tell you honestly how it's gone, good and bad.

What does month one actually look like, day by day?

Vague timelines (“results in 30–60 days”) are how agencies buy time. A vendor who can walk you through what happens in week one, two, three, and four — research, outreach, first meetings — has actually done this before and isn't guessing alongside you.

The bottom line

None of these questions are aggressive or unreasonable to ask. A vendor who's confident in their process will answer all five without hesitation. One who gets defensive, vague, or asks you to “just trust the process” is telling you something important before you've spent a dollar.
